My Daily Bread

Jenny Cox Holman writer, Jenny Cox Holman, Jenny Cox Holman Mississippi, My Daily Bread by Jenny Cox Holman

I’ve always loved all things bread - freshly made bread, homemade cornbread, buttery biscuits, flaky croissants and delicious pastries.

It's interesting that Jesus calls himself “The Bread of Life” obviously knowing that the generations before us and those of us like myself would share an affection for bread and be intrigued by His analogy!

When Jesus looked through a crowd to those eager and hungry for guidance and answers for their lives for what they really needed most - peace and provision - Jesus encouraged them to pray:

“‘Our Father in heaven,

hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come,

your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.

And lead us not into temptation,

but deliver us from the evil one.”

So my thought is why just pray for “daily bread?” God is going to give you just what you need for today. Daily. Not tomorrow or next week. Why though just for today - daily bread to fill that hunger for today?

Having our needs met daily gives rise to humility, trust and patience in our lives. Yes, we all need provisions: from money to pay our bills, to good health reports, and peace in our hearts to be loved for who we are. But too much of a good thing can spoil our hearts.

Who has gone to Sam’s Club and decided it was a great idea to stock up on that amazing deal of two pounds of strawberries or a gigantic bag of avocados, only for them to spoil because there was just too much to be used. Well, our lives are that way. Too much of a good thing will spoil our hearts with pride and complacency that we’ve got this thing of life all under control and figured out all by ourselves.

Isn’t it true that all we can really know is that we have today? No one knows the future but can know that God, who can be trusted with our eternity, can be trusted with our needs for the journey of our life.

What do you need today? Boldly ask God for the desires of your heart. He won’t leave you hungry. You will have enough for today. And when tomorrow comes “The Bread of Life” will fill your hungry spirit and heart with peace and provision with just what you need.

Next time I step into a bakery and see the loaves of freshly made bread, I will be reminded that God has what I need for today - my daily bread. ~
